When my wife Janie was seeking to know who the Lord really was, she asked God to reveal himself at the beginning of the summer. On June 1st she prayed an open ended prayer: “Show me who you really are by the end of the summer.” She promptly forgot about her prayer but God was at work arranging her circumstances. Some months later she ended up at a wedding (for a couple who weren’t even engaged in June) thousands of miles away. That was Labor Day weekend – the end of summer! She took a several hour car trip with a couple of turned on Believers who enthusiastically shared the Gospel with her. She became convinced that Jesus was Lord and that she had misunderstood him. On the Saturday before Labor Day weekend, marking the end of summer, she was converted to Christ!

True to answering her prayer, God moved by the end of summer. God loves a challenge! He takes the prayers of not-yet Believers seriously.

Making deals with God

Consider this:

Make deals with the not-yet believer. It’s a daring stand off. Either God will move specifically or nothing will happen. I’ve seen God move time after time in these situations. He loves to prove himself to Seekers.

Choose 3 things they need to see God move in their life to prove himself. Choose things that are measureable, for example jobs and finances. Stay away from romantic situations – those are too subjective. Pray in agreement for those things to happen.

I recommend you give it 90 days to see God show up. Come together at the end of those 3 months to compare notes.

In my experience the person in question will often have either forgotten about the prayer or will be convinced God didn’t answer their prayer, but when you look at the specifics it is usually clear that God clearly did move.

At that time bring them back to the original agreement – that they would open their hearts to Christ. Bring them around to the notion that God is madly in love with them! Pray together. Start their relationship with Christ.

  • Nicodemus

Cornelius was influenced by the Spirit of God for a time prior to his conversion to Christ (what I would call his second conversion) which was followed by his third conversion (the dramatic filling of the Spirit that happened at the preaching of Peter). Granted, his second and third conversions happened almost instantaneously, one after the other, but these two were distinct experiences. The question is, what led up to his two profound conversions? Lets focus on his first conversion.

He prayed regularly.
God put into Cornelius’ heart a hunger to draw near to seek him. Perhaps to a degree this invitation is given to all mankind. Sadly, few respond with a willingness to seek the Lord.

He probably connected with God through the only model he had seen – the prayers of the Jews who sought the Lord at various times of the day at his local temple. Though some of them no doubt merely went through the rote motions of prayer, Cornelius was sincere in his approach to seeking out God. God was able to get through to his hungry heart.

Cornelius was a Gentile so he was not allowed onto Temple grounds. Originally Jewish temples were to have an outer court that was to be dedicated to Gentile God fearers who were seeking to know the Lord. By the time of Jesus, nearly all temples had given up on these spaces in favor of turning these into stalls that sold sacrificial animals for pilgrims. It was this area at the Jerusalem temple where Jesus turned over tables and chased out the moneychangers and animals. Cornelius’ connection with God in prayer was a testimony of God’s willingness to draw near to anyone who is hungry to draw near to him.

As Cornelius prayed, God began to speak to him. Eventually God spoke clearly even to the point of sending an angel who spoke to him to call for Peter. He heard clear directions as to where Peter was located, what to ask Peter to do, and who to gather at his house. Cornelius had a deposit of faith for all of this to happen. When Peter arrived shortly thereafter, Cornelius’ nearest family and friends were there and ready to hear. He had told them about his angelic chat. Wouldn’t you come to hear Peter’s message if you heard from a reliable friend about the angel visitation?

As not-yet Believers pray regularly and sincerely for God to reveal himself they are likely to have an encounter with the God of the Bible before long. I have had numerous conversations with Seekers who have been in a responsive mode and inclined to seek after the Lord. My encouragement to them has been to open themselves up to hearing from God as he reveals himself. The problem with many God seekers is they are fearful of confining themselves to a single approach to God, or what they consider a too narrow approach to him. In so fearing they cut themselves off from what he may show them. Thus they are not entirely open hearted.

I have often encouraged them to give God a specific timeframe during which to reveal himself – for example, a 90-day period. Gayundin, to give God a few things to prove himself in what is measureable – usually three matters that can be clearly tracked and evaluated at the end of those three months. I have done this a number of times with God-fearers and seen God come through consistently manifesting/proving his reality to them. My own wife, Janie, came to Christ through such an arrangement. She prayed that God would show her himself as he really is by the end of the summer. She prayed that open ended prayer on Memorial Day weekend (the beginning of Summer). She promptly forgot about her prayer – something common with these situations. Sa katapusan, she was surprisingly converted on Labor Day weekend – the end of Summer. It wasn’t until a bit later that she remembered her “deal” with God. Such arrangements are best done with Christian friends who can keep track of the passing of time and can schedule a meeting at the end of the 90 days. Perhaps Cornelius made a deal with God along these lines and God revealed himself to this Italian leader.

He gave generously go the Poor.
God impressed upon Cornelius’ heart a value for caring for the Needy. He was a generous man or at least he became a generous man. In a sense, he was initially converted in his pocketbook. God calls us to generously give to matters that are his values. As we draw near to God, his values become our values.

One of the first matters God impresses upon us is the need to treat people differently.

Near the top of the list of his values is the Poor and how we treat them. As we draw near to the Poor we draw near to God. In turn, as we draw near to God, God gives us the desire to draw near to the Poor. This is the pattern of Scripture and the testimony of church history.

As he drew near to God, the Father began to sensitize Cornelius’ heart to the things that were kingdom values. Sa madaling salita, the matters that were important to God became important to Cornelius. It is probable that Cornelius had little exposure to God’s word considering that he was not allowed onto Temple grounds. Perhaps he heard occasional verses quoted by passing Jews. It’s difficult to know. In any case, Cornelius’ conversion is a testimony to the sovereign ability of the Holy Spirit to call sincere people into relationship with the Father.

Let’s bring many to the Lord. Kasabay nito, let’s pray that God intervenes directly in the lives of those around us like our friend Cornelius. Once he initiates the first conversion, it will be a short time until the second and third conversions take place.

Makipag-usap Up Ang Ebanghelyo ni Steve Sjogren

What God builds usually starts (and typically stays) on the smallish side.

I used to say that it started small but then would grow large, but now I see that often numbers usually only grow fat. I now see that it is almost always the case that a radical but small fringe gets the Kingdom lifestyle and message. Why does it stay small? It’s all about the offensive cost of mercy. Jesus said “Many are called but few are chosen” (Matt. 18). The context of that verse could well be restated, “Many are called but few choose” the Kingdom. The Kingdom, as God defines it, is always something that is set up according to his parameters, not ours. Most don’t like that much, so they protest, they decide it’s not for them, and vote themselves out of it like the religious people in Matthew chapter 18 (yes, it was the religious people who decided not to participate in the Kingdom once they figured out how the mercy of God works as in this story).

This Jesus story is fresh with me today. A few of us went out mixing it up with dozens of lost people who, like those in Nineveh, didn’t know their left hand from their right. We did a $1 carwash. We washed people’s cars and paid them a dollar for the privilege of serving them. We stunned many. Numbers teared up. We teared up! I’m always amazed what can happen when a few, enthused, dedicated people move in a common direction and pour their hearts into something. Do something great with God. It only takes a few.

With this increasing interest in the occult and New Age spirituality, one cannot help but wonder if demonic forces have invaded our society. I believe that we are seeing this strange awakening to spirituality because God Himself is planting a spiritual hunger in people and they are searching for understanding and fulfillment.

A new way to do evangelism
Ten years ago God directed me to begin using the spiritual gifts of the word of knowledge and prophecy (1 Corinthians 12) as a means of evangelism to reach people who are not responding to traditional evangelistic methods. Because people are already going to psychics, why not let them know what God truly has to say to them? It sounds kind of spooky and hard to do but actually, we found that it is as easy giving as speaking words of encouragement.

Basically, a word of knowledge is something that the Holy Spirit communicates to us and it is usually about a present or past situation while prophecy is about the future. We have trained ourselves to communicate what we sense God saying in everyday language, avoiding insider Christian talk and obscure Bible references. We are finding that people are actually very open to hearing from God and even receive Jesus Christ during these encounters.

Where’s that in the Bible?
When I first set out to do this type of evangelism, I searched the Bible and found in John 1:45–51 that Jesus drew Nathanael to follow Him by giving him a word of knowledge when He stated, “Here is a true Israelite, in whom there is nothing false.” It must have been accurate because Nathanael was amazed that Jesus knew about his character. Jesus also told Nathanael that He had “seen” Nathanael sitting under a fig tree; perhaps it was where Nathanael had his prayer times with God, because Jesus did call Nathanael a man of truth. Jesus went on to give him a word of prophecy for the future. This encounter caused Nathanael to declare, “Rabbi, you are the son of God, the King of Israel,” and to become one of His followers.

In John 4:7–30, 39–41, Jesus encounters a Samaritan woman and they began to talk about worshipping God. Then Jesus tells her a little about herself: she had been married five times and was not married to the man she now lived with. He did this without condemning her; He did it by a word of knowledge (about her past and present). Had Jesus been judging her, He would have called her an adulterous woman. Sa halip, He said to her, “What you said is quite honest.” Jesus seemed to find the positive in people. Jesus had appraised her accurately and His compassion and concern for her ignited an evangelistic flame inside. She ran back to the town to tell everyone about Him, which caused many Samaritans to follow Jesus that day.

Loving and encouraging people
We need to see ourselves as missionaries to our own communities. We need to study the language and culture and find ways to fit the message of Jesus into what people already believe. In today’s pop culture, there is a large number of “reality TV” shows. Many of these shows are mean-spirited and attempt to make rejecting people funny. The “Makeover” shows on the other hand, tend to build people up. Why not become part of an “Extreme Make Over—God Edition”!

It is evident with the increased popularity of psychics that people are longing to hear from God. People today are gripped by fear, beat down, and stressed out. They long for encouragement and hope. According to First Corinthians 14:3, prophecy (or any form of revelation) is for strengthening, encouragement, and comfort, especially when it is used as a means of evangelism.

One of our many approaches to Prophetic Evangelism is to give people encouragement and words from God about their destiny. It is very similar to how Jesus interacted with Nathaniel and the Samaritan woman. We say things like, “We took a class on how to encourage people; can we practice on you?” We go on to tell them how God sees them and give them new hope. We often hear, “Are you psychics?” That is actually their way of saying that you are accurate with what you are saying. We respond with, “No we are learning to hear God,” or “We are Christians, but probably not like most that you have met before.”

Imagine the possibilities if Christians everywhere began to speak positive words of encouragement to people. I’m convinced it would change the face of evangelism and bring millions of people into a relationship with Jesus.

Panalangin 4. “Gumalaw Up Aking Regalo

Reaching Artists, Actors, and Musicians in Hollywood by Richard Rossi

“You’re missionaries to Hollywood,” the Holy Spirit said to my wife Sherrie and I. We were shocked.

We met and married at Jerry Falwell’s Liberty University in 1984, a fundamentalist college in which we were forbidden to attend the movie theatre and taught that Hollywood was Sodom and Gomorrah. Deep down, we knew Jesus was a friend of sinners, and He never met a city He couldn’t change.

After Sherrie and I graduated Liberty, we returned to my hometown of Pittsburgh to preach and plant churches. For many years, I suppressed by creative instincts and worked solely as a pastor and healing evangelist.

Our ministry grew to healing services that drew thousands of people, but the flames of our marriage and ministry died when I began suffering from depression that stemmed from childhood abuse. I was trying to heal the world without healing myself, and became powerless and burned out.

I had resentment towards God. When people said, “God really uses you,” Tumugon ako, “I’m tired of being used.”

I experienced a rise and fall that landed me into a restoration process which included going to Healing for the Nations, a ministry in Atlanta that restores burned out leaders. I also enrolled in a twelve step program that continues with my participation in several recovery meetings a week.

Believing in God’s redemption for ourselves and others, we packed our belongings in a U-Haul. With our two children in tow, we made the three thousand mile journey west on a wing and a prayer, with no job or ministry position awaiting and $500 to our name. Little did we know, Hollywood would minister to us just as much as we would to Hollywood.

Sherrie and I felt led to read the bible cover to cover praying for insight into how to reach out to a culture of bohemians. From the opening pages of Genesis, God spoke to us as we read.

“I am the Master Artist, and I love to support other artists. As My Spirit hovered over creation in the beginning, I hover over you as you create today. Creativity shows you are made in My image. Your creativity is a part of My creativity.”

We discovered a spiritual hunger in Hollywood. On a prayer walk up Beachwood Drive leading to the famed Hollywood sign, the Spirit said, “I am transforming Hollywood into Holywood. My Son Jesus is the Bright and Morning Star, and His light can reach the stars.”

Soon actors, artist, producers, porn stars and painters began meeting in our small apartment to discuss their spiritual journey. Some were agnostic, some New Age, and some from Christian backgrounds that they felt suppressed their creativity.

We read the Parable of the Talents in Matthew 25, learning that God gave each of us talents and we must take the risk to follow where those talents lead. After praying for each other and our creative callings, we shared a potluck dinner.

A woman with prophetic gifting prayed and spoke. “The movies that will come out of this gathering will be a movement of My Spirit,” she said with fire in her eyes. “A city on a hill cannot be hid.”

We returned to God together. As part of my amends, I determined what God was doing would be built on Christ, and not my personality.

When God directed us to make movies, I played catch up and educated myself on film history by borrowing films from the local library and taking film classes at the community college. The European masterpieces of Bergman and Fellini gave me an idea: I could make a film as an allegory for my experience to share the gospel with others.

I began writing and directing a movie entitled “Sister Aimee: The Aimee Semple McPherson Story” about the 1920’s famed female evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson. The film came out of my brokenness, and the brokenness of others who were drawn to help.

We made the film on a shoestring budget of five thousand dollars, but it was honored at the Screen Actor’s Guild with a special screening that sold out within twenty four hours. When I stood before the 500 members of the guild who came, I spoke about God’s ability to work through broken, wounded people. I was speaking as much about myself as I was Sister Aimee.

I identified with Sister Aimee, because she was a conduit for healing for others, but struggled to get healing in her own life and relationships. When I was in the healing ministry, the higher I was up on the pedestal, the more isolated and depressed I became.

Sister Aimee was nominated for Best Film in Milan, set an attendance record at Quentin Tarentino’s New Beverly Cinema, and was the first of a half dozen films to come out of the Hollywood house church network Sherrie and I started to reach artists. Made by our members, these movies are now distributed worldwide in Blockbuster, Netflix, and Amazon.

Art is an eternal seed, reaching not only multiple countries but multiple generations. Those who work together artistically form a natural bond built around the three C’s: Christ, Creativity, and Community.

A high percentage of our participants are unbelievers drawn to the love of God that treats all people equally. A celebrity sits on the couch at a house church gathering beside the homeless person. The only difference is we let the homeless person use the shower and take the food in the refrigerator, and we protect celebrities by keeping who attends confidential.

Our gatherings of artists meet house to house, confessing our sins to each other and praying for healing, but we break from this sometimes to create new work. The film set then becomes the church.

We serve artists by allowing them time to process the injuries afflicted on them by religion and guiding them to relationship with the Great Artist. We use our collective creativity to share the gospel.

We call our Hollywood ministry Eternal Grace, because the theme of our outreach is grace. Grace saves us and gives us hope.

Some Christians wanted me to edit out of my film and my new novel the struggles characters go through, like Aimee’s divorce, breakdown, and morals trial. Because we chose to show God’s grace working in her weakness, the film reached many outside the church who are tired of preachers presenting a facade that Christians are perfect.

My new novel “Stick Man” tells the story of a young artist’s journey from legalism to love. I wrote it for my own catharsis and healing after my Dad died.

I prayed that Stick Man would bring healing to others who have experienced loss in life or in love. God has answered prayer, as I am receiving letters and e-mails from fans of the novel who have been touched by it.

Like my characters in Stick Man and Sister Aimee, I’ve discovered through my participation in recovery and therapy an eternal grace that is perfected in our weakness.

We are recovering from religion, reclaiming our creativity, and creating new work to share our faith and experience with others. Production is now under way on our latest film “Baseball’s Last Hero: The Roberto Clemente Story.”

Open your heart to the Great Creator and His creativity. A ministry adventure awaits you that will make a difference in the world, and is beyond your wildest dreams.

Jesus and his disciples were guests also. When they started running low on wine at the wedding banquet, Hesus’ mother told him, “They’re just about out of wine.”

Jesus said, “Is that any of our business, Mother—yours or mine? This isn’t my time. Don’t push me.

She went ahead anyway, telling the servants, “Whatever he tells you, do it.”

Six stoneware water pots were there, used by the Jews for ritual washings. Each held twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus ordered the servants, “Fill the pots with water.” And they filled them to the brim.

“Now fill your pitchers and take them to the host,” Jesus said, and they did.

When the host tasted the water that had become wine (he didn’t know what had just happened but the servants, of course, knew), he called out to the bridegroom, “Everybody I know begins with their finest wines and after the guests have had their fill brings in the cheap stuff. But you’ve saved the best till now!”

This act in Cana of Galilee was the first sign Jesus gave, the first glimpse of his glory. And his disciples believed in him. John 2:1-11 (The Message)

Sometimes our biggest leaps in growth as we endeavor to become more outward focus will occur when we stop, look and listen to how those closest to us perceive us. Recently my father was in town and he took my brother and I out for a steak dinner at an expensive restaurant. Over an after-dinner drink and cigar, my father and brother, agnostic on their best days and pagans on their worst, expressed something that broke my heart:

“Alam mo, I thought this church thing would be just a fad with you. I am glad you stuck with it, it has made you a better person in the long run. What I still don’t get about you and all this God stuff, is why you seem to love strangers more than your own flesh and blood.”

A. I was dumbfounded. How do you respond to such a brutal observation? They were right and I knew it as both of them proceeded to tell me how it made them and the rest of the family feel when I seemed more concerned with serving and loving others rather than my own family. It was a type of intervention that could only be done by men smoking cigars. It was heart-wrenching, but quite true. I had slipped out into the dangerous rapids of the OUTFLOW lifestyle and did not realize it. I was grasping onto flotsam and jetsam of this world, any that passed by, rather than taking hold of things of value.

It has long been a secret torment to me that I have had smashing success at evangelism with people I don’t know, meanwhile just about my entire family resist all forms of God and despise anything religious. Don’t misunderstand what I am saying here. I would never lay a guilt trip on anyone about their ownership over their family’s salvation. Sa katunayan, I guess I am just thinking aloud here as I write this. I mean, if you are a regular reader of Serve! magazine, chances are you are an expert at servant evangelism. That raises a question though. How good are you at serving those closest to you? This month we are going to pause and consider this. There will not be any articles from me in this issue. Instead I am calling on wiser voices to address a serious need. How do you serve your friends and family–the people that know you best?

Here is what I do know. The bible passage above can be very helpful in this. Look at the interaction between Jesus and his mom. Maybe I am reading more into than is actually there, but I see two things in the subtext of the passage:

  • 1) Jesus seemed a bit perturbed at his mother being pushy and telling how and when do ministry.
  • 2) His mom did indeed know best. It was a very powerful miracle and seemed to solidify his disciples from a ragtag band of loose cannons into a cohesive team

So what can we learn from our families and the experience of serving them? Read the rest of this issue to learn from some of the best voices on the topic!
