TURKEY DROP OUTREACH?

Dear Dr. Savant,

It seems like everyone does an outreach during Thanksgiving.  It reminds me of what the great songwriter Harry Chapin once said," anyone can do a canned food drive during the holidays, but what i want to know is what are these people going to eat the other fifty-one weeks of the year?"

It seems like feeding the poor with a feast at thanksgiving is a "no-brainer" to me.  Can you mess up an outreach at Thanksgiving?

  Dave Smeed, Rochester, NY

Dear Dave,

I have actually seen some pretty bad outreaches during the holidays.  It usually happens when a church keeps trying to outdo itself around the holidays, rather than just doing what they do well, and keeping it simple.  More times than not you are best at keeping outreaches safe, simple and fun.  You can be creative, but if you go over the top it can be disastrous.  Just ask Les Nessman:
You should also consider purchasing these wonderful books written by our own Steve and Janie Sjogren on outreach ideas from Kindness Resources LLC.  Check back in with us in a few months and I bet you will have something cool to report!
