More Bang For Your Buck

Big or small, nearly every community has some type of 4th of July celebration. Here is a way to have a very significant touch for less than $1.00 per person. You can do this with a small group, or a large outreach team from your church. You can even do this with a small group of friends or a couple of families. The important thing is just to get started. The first one, should be done with high grace in mind. Do not ask your church administrator or local litigation expert about this--they will say no. Yet, it is the best way to reach a family. Everyone loves fireworks. We do not advocate buying bottle rockets or M-80's and giving them away, how ever there are a couple of very cheap and safer alternatives that you can obtain and attach connect cards to and give away--do not give them to kids--give them to the parents of kids: SNAP ITS: These are flameless firecrackers. They have small "caps" of gun powder that are wrapped in tissue to make little noise bombs, not much louder than a cap gun. They are activated by concussion and are very safe. You simply toss them on a hard surface and they pop. You can purchase them in bulk and make little gift bags up with connect cards. Kids will love you! SPARKLERS and SNAKES: What kid doesn't love a sparkler?! These are a little more dangerous and should only be used with adult supervision since matches are involved. You may want to be a bit more careful using this as an outreach, but it will brighten the day of most families out for an Independence Day picnic. You can attach connect cards to the boxes of these "safe" fireworks very easily using a Dotto glue gun, and once again you can purchase these in bulk at a very low price. GLOW STICKS OR JEWELRY: It is often difficult to keep track of little ones at these big outdoor events that run until after dark and there is no better public service than to give families glow sticks or necklaces and and bracelets for their teens and toddlers. Heck, even big kids love these, and if you buy them in bulk, your price per unit can be as low as thirty cents each. Ken Glassmeyer is the Editor of Serve! Magazine.
